Cancer New Moon Today

Today there’s a New Moon in the sign of Cancer at 28 degrees. It’s aligned with the fixed star Procyon and opposed by Saturn. Oppositions imply culminations and endings. But a new Moon implies a new beginning. Some kind of combination involving endings and beginnings is likely to materialize.

Saturn exerts a strong restrictive or disciplining effect over painful emotions we’ve only superficially dealt with in the past. Restrictive/painful life themes that continue to repeat themselves in various ways require more attention. The maternal legacy/inheritance might explain a lot if we stop and take a closer look.

This new Moon might signify the end of a childish or delusional belief that says you can “skate by” without a deeper level of introspection, something more honest, courageous, and truthful – and things will still somehow magically improve. What is required – especially within the realm of relationships – is something that addresses the root cause of a difficulty. Alleviating symptoms – or ignoring them – is not enough.

The “shadow self,” especially under the darkness of a new Moon, is alive and active. It’s the part of ourselves we’re likely to disown as we perceive it as undesirable – dark, weak, and deserving of being hidden or rejected. It depends on your perspective, your level of self-esteem, self-acceptance, etc. how susceptible you’ll actually be. But we’re all susceptible to some extent.

The problem is that what you disown as negative and undesirable is likely to carry along with it positive charactersitics that could make life easier. It’s hard to pick and choose when everything is obscured in darkness. If you disown rage, laziness, fear, or vindictiveness your sense of authority, personal power, and ability to set boundaries might be diminished as well. This emotional dynamic is especially emphasized under a new Moon with a Saturn opposition. Balance is key.

The fixed star Procyon’s alignment with this new Moon activates the “collective shadow” where people “unite their shadows” in a group or as a society. This is dangerous development for civilization, for the security of the human race, and for your own personal sense of security.

I’m no expert on the Kabbala or Hebrew alphabet but it’s interesting to note that the 18th letter (Tzaddik) is associated with this new Moon. It seeks to teach that the world is broken and fixing it entails every person facing his or her own shadow while acknowledging and integrating more of it into conscious awareness.

Saturn is aligned with Pluto suggesting the timing is right for a massive collective or personal transformation associated with facing a stark emotional reality – the dangers of “skimming the surface,” feeding a delusion, or avoiding a confrontation with the self. A fish hook is the symbol of this letter. (Not sure how to interpret that.)

This quote from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn comes to mind:

“If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good from evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”

The 18th Tarot card is also thought to be instructive under this new Moon. It’s the “Moon card” that illuminates unknown shadowy bits of our nature trying to see the light of day.

Mystery permeates life at all times. It can be disorienting. The Moon needs to express itself and to feel secure. It’s hard to see in the dark. Our instincts are at least honest. Trusting them to guide you might be wise under the influence of darkness.

The sky is as dark as it gets during this point in the 30 day lunar cycle. When we can’t see other senses kick in and become more acute. It’s as though we’re being guided to navigate through an ending and a newly emerging beginning in a different way. Adjusting our belief system or philosophy of life may be part of the picture as you’ll notice this new Moon is placed in the 9th house.

If you’re an Aries the 4th house of home, family, and the past requires you to set boundaries that allow you to make the kind of impact you want to make in the professional world or with regard to your role within the public realm.

If you’re a Taurus issues related to honest communication with yourself and others – even the stuff that might hurt another’s feelings – seems necessary. Facing the facts seems important.

For Gemini issues related to security as it connects to self worth, net worth, trust and intimacy requires deeper exploration. Financial partnerships may feel treacherous. Your own role in an insecure partnership might need to be acknowledged.

For Cancer the role you play within the realm of relationships could benefit from deeper introspection. Changing your style and approach to something more expressive of your true self changes the nature of relationships in a positive direction.

For Leo this new Moon could signify a better flow between the subconscious and conscious mind, a closer mind/body connection, and the ability to inform your work with the vague intuitive guidance you receive.

For Virgo attention to the details of your love life, your receptivity to love, and overall sense of “deservingness” in love requires a deeper personal exploration.

For Libra professional success may require you to assert your authority at home – to set limits and firm boundaries and to fortify your foundation for a new beginning.

For Scorpio the issue may be confronting beliefs that don’t align with the facts on the ground. Communicating or clarifying your plans for the future might be necessary.

For Sagittarius the issues may be related to intimacy, give and take, financial partnerships, and trust. A closer more introspective look at your emotional approach to money, values, and the means of supporting yourself might be required.

For Capricorn emotions and security issues are triggered. The question may be “are you a loner with your own agenda or a partner willing to make difficult compromises or concessions for the health of the partnership.

For Aquarius a new emotional beginning relates to your work and work methods. In response to being set free to pursue what you love it might be time to change the emphasis or nature of your work life. A regular meditation practice illuminates and re-assures.

Pisces inspects more closely the need to develop an artistic talent or to assess the need for sacrifice in love. A contribution to the greater good or a community cause might feel right. You might be destined to sacrifice your own needs for the greater good.
